What we believe
Our philosophy
Our name comes from where we sit. On one side is your business: its people, workflows and data. On the other is a fast-moving field of AI models and tools. We are the applied layer in between, the part that makes the two fit together.
That fit is where most AI projects go wrong. So we don’t lead with a product or a favourite model. We start by learning how your business actually runs, and only then decide what to build.
Understand the business first
We spend time with the people who do the work, look at the real data, and map how things actually happen. Good AI follows from that understanding. It can’t replace it.
Be honest when AI isn’t the answer
Sometimes the right fix is a cleaner process, a better spreadsheet, or waiting until the data is ready. We’d rather tell you that than sell you something you don’t need.
Choose tools on merit
We have no ties to any AI vendor. We use closed or open-source models, or both, based on cost, privacy and how well they do the job.
Build for the people who’ll use it
A system only matters if your team uses it. We design around their daily work, train them well, and stay around after launch.

I’ve spent almost 15 years building software and leading engineering teams for large companies in the United States and Europe.
Over that time, one lesson kept repeating itself: the projects that succeed aren’t the ones with the most impressive technology. They’re the ones that solve the right business problem. So I’ve always started with how a business actually works, what slows it down, and what it needs, and only then decided what to build.
Since 2023, I’ve worked as an AI engineer, building systems with large language models, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), and open-source model fine-tuning. I’ve watched many companies rush to “add AI” without a clear reason, and I’ve seen how much value it creates when it’s applied to the right problem in the right way.
I started Applied Layer to give companies that kind of practical, honest help. We study your business first, recommend AI only where it makes a real difference, and tell you plainly when it doesn’t.
Where we work
Two offices. Working wherever you are.
Applied Layer is registered in Estonia, in the European Union, with offices in Tallinn and Kathmandu. Clients in Europe work with an EU company under EU law, and we meet in person where it helps.
Most of our work, from interviews to deployment, can also be done remotely, and we plan meetings around your time zone.
